The Islamist, the heroine, the commander-in-chief, and the patriots

I first got the news of the Fort Hood shootings via Twitter — at first a stream of unconfirmed reports that there were three gunmen, seven killed, and a dozen more injured; then as the major news outlets started their reporting and Army officials releasing more accurate information, we learned that this atrocity was committed by one serviceman, but details of him had not emerged.

My subsequent thought: I have a bad feeling that he’s a suicidal Muslim.

Indeed, Major Nidal Malik Hasan is a Muslim, now in a coma after being stopped by a local police officer, Kimberly Munley. Our heroine was, thankfully, in the wrong place at the right time:

On Thursday afternoon Ms Munley was doing her usual job of directing traffic on the sprawling base. By chance, she and her partner happened to walk past the Soldiers’ Readiness Processing Centre soon after Major Hasan — armed with two handguns — cornered his fellow soldiers. Soldiers who witnessed the rampage described the gunfire as continuous, methodical and well aimed.

Ms Munley succeeded in bringing him down by shooting him four times, even after being hit by a bullet that passed through both her legs, according to witnesses.

Hasan was an Army psychiatrist and slated to to be deployed overseas. He’s known to have public anti-American sentiments and have voiced his displeasure of being in the Army and having to go on tour. He ended up massacring 13 patriots and injuring many others, proclaiming “Allahu Akbar!” (Arabic “God is great!”) before committing the heinous act.

That’s what the terrorists say before beheading their enemies. That’s what the terrorists cry out before suicide bombings. That’s what the terrorists shout out in the streets, waving their guns in the air.

The mainstream media is avoiding discussions of Hasan’s religion in the name of political correctness and cultural sensitivity. I say BS! Thirteen fine soldiers are dead and their families grieving, yet the media wants us to think that Hasan’s Muslim faith has no bearing on how he conducted himself and how he perceived America?

At least some major Muslim groups have come out condemning the attack. But the mainstream media continues to cover their ears and eyes, not to acknowledge the man’s faith. Talk about disrespecting the dead soldiers.

Then there’s President Obama’s awkward press conference about the Fort Hood massacre. He spoke more like a fumbling insensitive fool than America’s commander-in-chief. Pull. Yourself. Together. For God’s sake!

The greater tragedy in all this is that our honorable men and women of the armed forces not only have to risk their lives in the front lines, but also face dangers within their ranks from some — and I believe Hasan isn’t the only one — anti-American Islamist servicemen.

God rest the souls of those who perished at Fort Hood and heal the hearts of their families. Americans appreciate each and every individual soldier for defending our freedom. God bless you.
