Never underestimate Obama

Well, ObamaCare was signed into law March 23, 2010. What previous presidential Democrats couldn’t accomplish was finally realized by a young president not even halfway into his term, a president who rose from the ranks of community activist, U.S. senator, and into the Oval Office. And what’s more intriguing is the fact that he and his Congress are almost bottoming out in the disapproval ratings.

Yet a bill overhauling our health care and federalizing a great portion of our economy still found its way to become law. Granted, it was quite a dramatic struggle as the Democrat leadership and President Obama pulled out all the stops to ensure passage by appeasing the Blue Dog Democrats, bribing the likes of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE), and threaten with uncommon procedural maneuvers. But in the end, the flood of phone calls from the American people didn’t matter; the thousands of protesters in Washington, D.C. were ignored. Evidently a majority of Democrats were willing to bet their careers on this single bill, voting against their constituents’ bidding.

Sure, President Obama had to postpone his Asian tour, but I think he didn’t really want to go anyways being as unpopular as he is (anti-Obama sentiment was rampant in Indonesia where he’d spent his childhood). He was betting the farm on getting Congress to pass the monstrous bill. He got a generous payoff.

Conservatives are already galvanizing around efforts to challenge the law in court and to repeal it (Republicans are now very — overly? — optimistic on 2010 and 2012 election prospects). But it’s obvious that most people have underestimated President Obama, the Great Campaigner.

Other post-mortem thoughts:

  • Once and for all, debunk the myth of a “moderate” Democrat. There is no such thing. Rep. Stupak (D-MI) and his anti-abortion gang caved quickly once President Obama signed an executive order to satisfy their conscience.
  • The Democrats no longer are just left-wing. They are far-left socialists, bent on expanding the federal government, and in turn, their political power.
  • The Democrats have no shame in being hypocrites. How else do you explain that members of Congress are exempt from ObamaCare?
  • President Obama still has alluring powers over Democrats (and others?). It’s more than just Kool-Aid he’s pouring…
  • Speaker Pelosi and Leader Reid are unafraid to go down hard and drag America down with them.

Do not underestimate this man in the White House. There’s no doubt that after a victory with ObamaCare, he will be emboldened to take on several other socialist agendas. The midterm elections are more critical than ever.
