Discount airline Spirit Airlines wants to impose a $45 per bag fee for travelers with a carry-on bag, and well, that didn’t go over well with customers. But you know what, it’s a free market and Spirit is certainly able to raise fees as it pleases amidst bad publicity and public uproar. Unfortunately, there are folks in Washington who do not appreciate the free market mechanism — such as Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY). The senator has lobbied for the Treasury Department to designate a carry-on bag as a necessity for travel, therefore exempting it from fees.
A completely a waste of Schumer’s time and energy, but herein we find out how anti-freedom and anti-capitalistic he is. The senator has no faith in the American market, and misplaces his faith in everything government.
Such are the “leaders” we elect to govern us. There’s something wrong with this picture. Besides, I’m almost certain that most of his constituents care more about jobs, health care, and rising deficits, than a $45 bag fee on a small airline.
