Yes, maybe it’s a bit drastic, but if the Republican Party wants to have any chance of a comeback, it needs to think about purging those who have skeletons in their closets. Extramarital affairs, embarrassing addictions, alcoholism, closet socialists, etc. — step out now and do your party a favor, please.
Many people are just shocked by the news that Gov. Mark Sanford is in an affair with a woman from Argentina. After all, he’s one of the rising stars of the Republican Party. He’s even a contender for running mate during McCain’s presidential campaign. And by standing firm on his fiscal conservative principles, he’s earned the respect of many. Those in the south especially were proud of this governor.
And although some pundits would think on the bright(er) side that it was better to expose this now than later, I’d argue that Sanford and his Republican friends are on thin ice. Matters like this are going to light up the liberal blogosphere and mainstream media, and Republicans will lose their voice in the important battles against the Democrats’ health care plan, Justice nominee Sotomayor, and many more. The party of pro-life, pro-family values will again be condemned as a party of hypocrites. Conservatives, again, will wander in the desert.
Right now the biggest issue with the Republican Party is trust. And that is something to be earned.
