The White House just doesn’t get this terrorists-like-to-target-NYC problem. There was the first World Trade Center bombing, then 9/11, then not even two weeks ago the failed SUV bomb. Yet the administration still thinks there’s too much money poured into NYC’s anti-terrorism efforts that it’s slashing $53 million:
The New York City area will get $111 million for transit security in the final 2010 budget – a 27% chop from last year’s $153 million. The port security program is getting chopped from $45 million to $33.8million – a cut of 25%.
“The fact that the Obama administration would cut New York’s homeland security funding just 11 days after the Times Square car bomb attempt is dangerous and unconscionable,” [Rep. Pete] King said.
The Department of Homeland Security had forecast the cuts in December, but local leaders thought the administration would change its mind after a car packed with fireworks, propane and fertilizer nearly detonated in Times Square on May 1.
Another terror plot busted up last September targeted the city’s subways.
This administration clearly isn’t interested in keeping NYC safe. Never mind that it’s our most populous city, a world financial center, a major tourist attraction, a busy port, etc. It’s evident that terrorists continue to plot against the city. If the W.H. wants to be taken seriously about anti-terrorism, then it can reverse this decision to boost NYC’s anti-terrorism resources.
