Former Bush administration DOJ offiial John Yoo made an appearance on The Daily Show to discuss waterboarding with Jon Stewart. Yoo was instrumental in clearing the way for the Defense Department to categorize al Qaeda terrorists as enemy combatants, therefore not subject to the Geneva Conventions. He also offered legal opinion which allowed the CIA to apply “enhanced interrogation techniques” in order to obtain crucial intelligence from high-value detainees.
Jon Stewart was obviously on the anti-Bush side and it’s evident in his questioning of Yoo. However, armed with a depth of legal and historical knowledge, Yoo certainly commanded the interview with convincing style.
The Left goes crazy knowing their government applied “torture,” even to mass murdering terrorists. They simply cannot bring themselves to understand that the EIT program was not torture at all. The detainees suffered no injuries, mental or physical. In fact, in each session (only three terrorists had undergone EIT) medical and psychological personnel were present to ensure no lasting harm was done.
Marc Thiessen did his research and actually interviewed the CIA agents who used EIT. He also should be applauded for confronting CNN’s Amanpour on her miscategorization of CIA’s EIT, comparing it with water torture in other cultures.
It’s time to put this to rest. The Bush administration did not torture and ran the EIT program within legal limits. Believe what you want, but thanks to EIT we were kept safe for years until the crotch bomber on Christmas Day, 2009 under the Obama administration.
